New Scrappage Scheme for Vans in Preparation for Central London ULEZ

As we all know, London is a very congested city and the thought of regularly driving on these roads can be a headache. In recent weeks, it has been revealed that there is a new £23 million scrappage scheme being implemented by the government to help remove the most polluting vans off of central London’s roads, in preparation for the ultra-low emission zone legislative changes (ULEZ).
Announced by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, this scheme is designed to encourage small and micro-businesses to switch to cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles such as electric and hybrid models. When this latest legislative change is implemented in April 2019, this ULEZ will begin to charge drivers of vehicles which do not meet the new emissions standards to come into London, which will be active on a 24/7 basis. As the new scheme is introduced, small and micro-businesses will be able to scrap their vans that do not comply with the new ULEZ standards, inevitably reducing overall emissions and traffic levels across the city all year round.
The Mayor of London has plans to fund this scheme, by asking ministers to match-fund London’s proposed scrappage scheme with £23 million of Government money, funded from either the £245 million National Clear Air Fund or from underspend over the course of last year on Highways England’s £75m air quality pot. Officials at Transport for London (TFL) have been consulted to work out how the money can be spent more effectively, with further details of the new scheme becoming publicly available in 2019.
