The Age of The Driverless Car Approaches

The Age of The Driverless Car Approaches

You may be thinking what car you would like to be driving in the future but the question you should perhaps be asking is what car will be driving you in the future? A specially modified version of the Nissan Leaf embarked on the longest trip ever undertaken by a driverless car in the UK. Starting in Bedfordshire and finishing in Sunderland, this car of the future only needed the driver to take control when using motorway services to get charged. So, are we heading into the age of autonomous driving?

The Nissan Leaf not only conquered our motorways but also successfully navigated the windy narrow roads of England. It did this by using its eight laser scanners which search the road for other cars or obstacles. These are joined by its seven cameras which look for traffic lights and read speed limit signs. Finally, to top it off, the ultrasonic radar detector on the front of the car monitors the speed of the vehicle in front, allowing it to slow the Nissan down if the car slows down or brakes suddenly.

With this successful trip with all its lasers, cameras and radars, we could soon be seeing many more autonomous cars on our roads. Ministers are already drawing up a ‘Digital Highway Code’ to get self-driving vehicles on UK roads by 2021.

At Marshall Leasing, we understand that the industry is constantly changing, and that it can often be difficult to keep on top of the latest legislative and trend alterations. It’s important to note the upcoming technological developments to best benefit you and your fleet for the future.
