Employees Are Calling for EV Charging Points at Work

The demand for electric vehicle charging points is rising still, as it has been recently discovered by the joint Government and industry campaign ‘Go Ultra Low’ that one in three people who work in an office would like to see the introduction of EV charging points to staff car parks.

This information comes from a survey conducted by Go Ultra Low, which was prompted by a recent change to benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax this year. This change means that people who drive company cars, which are purely electric, will pay no BIK tax in 2020/21.

Interestingly, though, the survey found that only 25% of “professionals” were aware of this change. Once educated on the new rule, 31% of office workers said that they would like to have the option of electric company cars or EV carpooling, and 42% said that that they would be more likely to choose an EV over a petrol or diesel company car.

Although, 39% of the workers themselves acknowledged that the introduction of EV company cars could be difficult for their employer, given the “challenging financial conditions” brought on by the recent lockdown.

Head of the Go Ultra Low campaign, Poppy Welch, said “Employers have already made positive changes in the workplace to be more sustainable, but there are further changes businesses can make.

“Our research has shown that EVs offer a popular solution for companies looking to reduce their environmental footprint and satisfy their worker’s concerns”.

She then went on to say, “There are a variety of steps that businesses can take to be more sustainable, but it can be difficult to know where to start – especially when a number of measures require an upfront cost to implement.

“Recent changes to BIK tax means EVs offer low-hanging fruit to employers looking to enhance their company’s green credentials. From their reduced environmental impact, to the savings you can make on fuel, tax and maintenance costs, EVs bring significant benefits.”
