British Parking Association propose to increase maximum parking fines to £120

British Parking Association propose to increase maximum parking fines to £120

Whilst ministers aim to reduce maximum parking fines from £100 to £50, the British Parking Association (BPA) is proposing that it should instead be raised to £120.

Motorists can receive parking fines for offences including parking in two bays – this applies even if just one wheel is slightly over the white line – or overstaying by any amount of time, even a few minutes.

Based on a minimum wage of £8.91 for 35-hour week, it would take the equivalent of two days to pay off a £120 parking ticket.

President of the AA Edmund King recently expressed that, in his opinion, this is too high for the nature of the offence.

BPA made the point that a £50 fine, discounted to £25 if paid within 14 days, could be a more attractive option to drivers than a higher parking fee, and therefore could result in more parking offences.

In the first six months of the financial year 2021/22, private parking firms issued in excess of 22,000 tickets for parking offences, adding up to £400 million. The government has proposed new Parking Code of Practice and Framework including the elimination of fines issued to drivers who have made a genuine mistake and a ten-minute grace period.

The consultation period closed on October 12 2021 and the framework is yet to be approved.
