The M6 will soon host one of the world’s first hydrogen refuelling stations for lorries
17 August 2022
Plans to install one of the first hydrogen refuelling stations for lorries in the world at the Exelby Services’ Golden Fleece station on the M6 in Carlisle are underway and the facilities could be complete within the year.
Element 2 is the company responsible for ‘building the hydrogen refuelling network needed to achieve the UK’s zero carbon targets’ and are using the new hashtag #MakeDieselHistory.
These plans indicate that infrastructure is being put into place in order for hydrogen lorries, which are not yet commercially available in the UK, to arrive on our roads.
Hydrogen does not release carbon emissions and is therefore recognised as a sustainable replacement for fossil fuels in many industries. In terms of the automotive sector, the redesigning of vehicles, heating systems and manufacturing sites are just a few of the changes that will be necessary in order to make switching to hydrogen viable.
Managing director of Exelby Rob Exelby said,“Following the ever-increasing global focus on tackling climate change, now is the time to be proactive and embrace low and zero carbon alternatives to diesel drivetrains.
“With Element 2’s expertise we can implement hydrogen refuelling on our existing service areas to offer a one-stop-shop for all road users as we transition to net-zero.”
