DfT to update the Driver CPC qualification for HGV drivers

DfT to update the Driver CPC qualification for HGV drivers

Following a consultation from the Department for Transport, the UK government has announced that it will update its Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification for heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers. Reforms will include cutting the minimum course length in half from 7 hours to 3.5 hours and decoupling e-learning from trainer-led courses. This will be in addition to the generation and introduction of extra core course content and encouraging informal assessments at the end of each module. The DfT intends to bring these changes into effect... Read full article

Almost half of speed cameras in England and Wales are inactive

A new Freedom of Information (FOI) request for data from the Department for Transport has found that almost half (46 per cent) of fixed speed cameras in England and Wales are inactive. The data relates to cameras operated by 25 out of 44 police forces. Dash camera manufacturer Road Angel, who submitted the FOI request, discovered the following key statistics: All eight fixed speed cameras in Northamptonshire were inactive. There was just one active camera out of 31 in Gwent. Just 20 out of 113 fixed speed cameras in Derbyshire, which has the most cameras... Read full article

How to avoid scam parking apps

How to avoid scam parking apps

UK consumer champion Which? recently issued a warning to drivers about ‘rogue advertisers’ who are promoting scam parking apps and using QR codes to trick victims into setting up recurring payments to false schemes. A member of the public told their experience about a scam website called Alltainment: “I tried to sign up for a parking app and instead was directed to a site which took my card details and signed me up to pay £39.99 a month, nominally for an entertainment package. This seems to have caught quite a few people out, according to... Read full article

This year saw highest number of pothole-related breakdowns

In the summer of 2023, the RAC dealt with the highest number of pothole-related breakdowns in any third quarter since it began recording this data in 2006. The breakdown specialists rescued 5,978 drivers between July to September from damaged shock absorbers, broken suspension springs and distorted wheels, amid other damage. Worse still, this period was not the worst quarter of the year. January to March 2023 saw the highest number of callouts in any quarter since 2006 (14,827). This means that drivers are now almost twice as likely to break down on the road due... Read full article

Several councils throughout the UK are joining the City of London in enforcing Ultra Low Emissions Parking (ULEP) charges which impact those who drive diesel vehicles or older petrol cars.  Drivers of older petrol and diesel cars are being charged more to park.  London’s ULEP fees have been in place since 2018 with exempt vehicles paying £5 per hour, diesel and petrol vehicles registered from 2005 paying £7.20 and all other vehicles paying £10 per hour. In the London Borough of Haringey, diesel car owners pay an annual fee of... Read full article

Have you heard about ‘anti-braking’ technology?

The latest forecast speed camera updates include new ‘anti-braking’ technology which can detect when drivers brake harshly directly before passing a speed camera. The system, which uses a standard fixed speed camera and two mobile radar devices, has been successfully trialled in North Eastern Spain and could soon be rolled out in the UK. Founder of dash cam company Road Angel, Gary Digva told the Express newspaper, “From the information I have, this technology will probably be making its way over to the UK towards this part of next...
