Remember to notify the DVLA if you have a medical condition
12 October 2022
An important issue for those responsible for fleets is the declaration of medical conditions by their drivers.
If one of your drivers is diagnosed with a medical condition and fails to declare it to the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA), they could receive a fine of up to £1,000, or be prosecuted if they are involved in an accident. Additionally, they could have their licence revoked.
Notifiable medical conditions include:
- diabetes or taking insulin
- syncope (fainting)
- heart conditions (including atrial fibrillation and pacemakers)
- sleep apnoea
- epilepsy
- strokes
- glaucoma.
This is not a complete list and if a driver is diagnosed with a new medical condition, the best way to be certain if they should notify the DVLA is use the government website's online service to check if their condition needs to be reported or, alternatively, to check the A to Z list for the condition.
If their condition is notifiable, they may need to inform the DVLA via an online form or by printing and sending a paper form.
The driver may be required to surrender their licence and stop driving if:
- their doctor tells them to stop driving for three months or more
- their medical condition affects their ability to drive safely and lasts for three months or more
- they do not meet the required standards for driving because of their medical condition.
