Drivers are being advised to book their MOT well in advance

The AA is urging drivers of vehicle which are due to be MOT tested between now and December to book well in advance.

There are more than 10 million cars, vans and minibuses due to be tested during the Autumn period. Penny Stoolman from the AA said, “With household budgets stretched, drivers may be tempted to leave repairs on their car until the last possible moment or wait for the MOT to spot faults.

"But with colder, wetter weather due in the coming months leaving blown bulbs, torn tyres and cracked windscreens unrepaired could cause more damage to both the car and the wallet”.

Interestingly, the average number of cars, vans and minibuses which failed their MOT test in 2021 was 10 per cent lower than expected by respondents to an AA survey, at just 29 per cent. The average estimate by the 13,000 drivers polled was 39 per cent.

A large proportion of respondents (two fifths) also believed that tyre damage was the primary reason for MOT failures. This was disproved when the failure data from 2021 and 2022 was analysed.
