Warning issued to ‘rowdy drivers’ as new cameras are set to tackle ‘antisocial driving’

Bradford, South Gloucestershire, Great Yarmouth, and Birmingham are hosting pilot schemes, backed by the UK government, trialling a new road camera which will identify and track drivers who break the law by excessively revving vehicles’ engines using modified exhausts. 

These ‘antisocial driving’ offenders are often referred to as ‘boy racers’. 

Aside from causing general disruption, excessive road noise has been found to contribute to health problems such as heart attacks, strokes and dementia. To represent the level of disturbance within a figure, the ‘social cost’ of urban road noise through lost productivity from sleep disturbance and health costs is estimated to be between £7billion to £10billion per year. 

According to the government website, a report published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in March 2011 identified environmental noise as the second largest environmental health risk in Western Europe.

Former Transport Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said, “Rowdy road drivers beware – these new cameras will help the police clampdown on those who break the legal noise limits or use illegal modified exhausts to make excessive noise in our communities.

“We’ll be working closely with the local authorities and police to share any findings, and I hope that this technology paves the way for quieter, peaceful streets across the country.”
