Last year was the most dangerous year on record for driving

The Ministry of Justice has revealed that 2021 was the most dangerous year on record for driving.

Last year, cases of drunk and drug driving both hit new all-time highs at 33,742 cases and 27,962 cases respectively.

The rise in these figures mirror a 7 per cent year on year rise in road accident fatalities (1,558) during 2021.

Other significant figures from 2021 relating to England and Wales include:

  • 75,159 drink and drug driving offences successfully prosecuted (on average 206 a day).
  • 5,951 dangerous driving convictions - the highest level since 2011.
  • A 9 per cent rise in death by dangerous driving offences between 2020 and 2021.
  • A 78 per cent rise in careless driving prosecutions.
  • 604 convictions for causing serious injury by dangerous driving – the highest number in a year on record.
  • 203,545 speeding convictions (a 75 per cent rise compared with 2011).
  • A total of 732,363 motoring cases resulting in fines or sentences.

Chief Constable for the National Police Chiefs’ Council, Jo Shiner said, “Since the introduction of roadside screening devices for drug driving in 2015 we have seen an increase in prosecutions for this offence.

“Our policing goal remains to save lives and prevent harm by continuing to improve our national information, intelligence and professional knowledge around drink and drug driving and dangerous driving”.
