EV drivers to be paid for lending energy to the National Grid
23 March 2022
A new trial which is set to begin between April and June 2022 will see electric vehicles (EVs) charging on driveways plugged into a system which helps to balance the national grid.
The EVs would essentially serve as a giant battery to balance energy supply at times of low wind speeds as the country moves away from fossil fuels and towards greener energy sources.
If successful we could see a national rollout of the system, allowing suppliers to draw power from parked vehicles at times of low supply or high demand.
EV owners will need to agree for power to be drawn from their vehicles and will be paid in return. Octopus Energy, who are running the scheme, have already recruited 135 households for the trial.
It is estimated that at peak hours between 4.00PM and 7.00PM, a typical household only uses around three kilowatt hours of energy, leaving about four kilowatt hours of spare capacity. This means that one million electric cars could provide 4,000 megawatt hours to the grid during those periods, equating to around 5,000 onshore wind turbines.
