Anti-tailgating technology mandatory in EU as of July 6 2022

A new ruling will mean that all new cars in Europe and Northern Ireland will be required by law to have anti-tailgating technology fitted as of July 6 2022. 

The technology uses radar and cameras to detect hazards on the road and act by slowing or stopping the vehicle if the driver does not respond to an alarm signalling it is too close to the vehicle ahead. Currently, this system is only used in 12 to 15 per cent of cars. 

Whilst the UK government has yet to confirm if it will follow suit, AA president Edmund King spoke to The Daily Telegraph and said that manufacturers will go ahead with installing the technology regardless.

He said, “Most cars are global so if it is required in the bulk of Europe, it is highly unlikely they would make a low-grade version for the UK.

“In the past, we know lower grade cars were made for the Australian and African markets. However, the UK market is so close to the European market, my understanding is that the vast majority of new model cars will have it.”

A spokesperson for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) added, “With the heavily integrated nature of the UK and European automotive sectors, regulatory divergence is not advantageous for either party.”

The ruling will be known as ‘Dev’s law’ in honour of a campaign by Meera Naran, mother of eight-year-old Dev who was killed in an accident between a lorry and his grandfather’s car.
