New ADEPT Live Labs 2 programme aims to help decarbonise local UK roads

The Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT) has opened a new three-year UK-wide programme ‘ADEPT Live Labs 2: Decarbonising Local Roads’. The programme has received £30 million in funding from the Department for Transport.
ADEPT is a professional membership association which represents ‘Directors of Place’ from over 70 per cent of combined, county, unitary and metropolitan local authorities throughout England.
The first Live Labs programme, launched in 2017, was a two-year, £22.9 million project funded by the Department for Transport which was cut short due to the Covid19 pandemic.
According to ADEPT’s prospects, ‘The Live Labs 2 programme will focus on finding ambitious joint venture partnerships between the public and private sectors in local areas to develop and implement zero carbon and climate change focused local roads plans, including:
- Operation and maintenance of existing local roads assets.
- Supporting fixed and moving assets that enable successful operations.
- Construction of new local roads assets (including for new housing / developments).
- Enhancement, upgrade, adaptation and decommissioning of existing local roads assets.’
Applicants to the programme will be asked to consider decarbonisation in terms of the whole-life cycle of local roads, meaning from the point of construction or modification, operation, maintenance and machinery used, to decommissioning.
