Traffic levels in England and Wales could grow up to 54 per cent by 2060

The National Road Traffic Projections report published in December 2022 by the Department for Transport predicts that traffic levels in England and Wales could grow up to 54 per cent by 2060, contributing to an 85 per cent rise in road delays in the same timeframe.

Although this is the ‘upper limit’, and the projections also note that the rise in road traffic could be as low as 8 per cent, but that the likeliest increase is 22 per cent more traffic than we currently see on our roads.

These projections consider the adoption of autonomous vehicles as well as social and behavioural change and decarbonisation.

The report adds that “congestion is dependent on the overall level of traffic relative to road capacity and should be expected to increase as traffic grows, provided capacity does not increase to match it.” This suggests that the Ministers may push for the implementation of more roads to accommodate larger traffic levels.

Department for Transport chief analyst Amanda Rowlett said that ‘these projections will be used to inform and shape debate in the transport sector’.
