The 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles has been pushed back to 2035

As you are likely already aware, the UK Government recently announced that its 2030 deadline to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles has been pushed back by five years to 2035.

The Prime Minister expects that the ‘vast majority’ of cars will be electric by 2030 but believes that the choice to switch to electric should remain with the consumer and not the government.

After the 2035 ban, second-hand petrol and diesel vehicles will continue to be available for purchase.

This push-back has impacted car manufacturers who have already invested considerable amounts in producing new electric vehicles ranges.

Interestingly, the government’s 2035 ban on new gas boilers was also simultaneously relaxed as new exemptions for lower income households were introduced, as well as a new grant for those wanting to replace their existing gas boiler.

The latest industry data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that one in five new cars registered in August 2023 were electric, and almost 200,000 new electric cars have been sold so far in 2023.

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said, “Manufacturers will continue to put innovative new models on the market but consumers need encouragement to buy more than ever.

“Today’s announcement must be backed up with a package of attractive incentives and measures to accelerate charging infrastructure to give consumers the confidence to switch. Carrots move markets faster than sticks.”
