There were more fatal collisions in 2022 than any other year in the past decade

A recent report by the Department for Transport (DfT) reveals that the number of deaths caused by road traffic accidents in Britain rose by 10 per cent year on year between 2021 and 2022.

The rise of fatalities from 1,558 in 2021 to 1,711 in 2022 has been attributed by the government to an increased number of cars on the road following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.

Interestingly, data from 2019 supports this theory because it shows that there was a 2 per cent decline in the number of road fatalities which occurred in 2022 compared with 2019.

In 2022, Great Britain was found to have the fifth safest roads, with the fewest number of fatalities per million population compared with 38 other countries for which data was available.

RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis said, “The data shows there were more fatal collisions last year than at any point over the last decade caused by drivers or riders being distracted, impaired (458 lives lost) or breaking the speed limit (303 lives lost).

“We also continue to urge the government to treat this issue with the upmost seriousness by reintroducing casualty reduction targets which were scrapped in 2010.”
