More than half of drivers mistakenly believe fully autonomous driving is currently possible
04 October 2023
A recent survey conducted by the motor insurers’ automotive research centre, Thatcham Research, found that driver perception of self-driving cars does not match reality.
One key figure which stands out is this: 52 per cent of drivers mistakenly believe that fully autonomous driving is currently possible. This figure rises to 72 per cent of drivers in the US.
The safety experts have recommended that fleet managers develop policies which clearly communicate the capabilities and limitations of autonomous vehicles to their company car and van drivers to avoid confusion and limit risks.
Thatcham Research vehicle technology specialist, Tom Leggett, says that high-quality driver training is required to help drivers understand the limitations of autonomous technology and their responsibilities as the driver whist using it. Regulations require drivers to remain prepared to resume control at any time whilst using autonomous driving features.
Autonomous systems such has Ford BlueCruise and Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT are able to monitor driver attention and issue warnings if the driver becomes distracted. The systems can also bring the vehicle to a halt if the driver ignores these warnings.
