EV owners are waiting several hours to use a public charger

A lack of EV charging points is creating wait-times as long as three hours for drivers wanting to charge their vehicles.

Data from Zap Map, shows that there are currently just 6,712 rapid and ultra-rapid EV charging devices across the UK, serving more than 420,000 electric vehicles which are currently on our roads.

Last year, it was found that the rollout of EV chargepoints in the UK was moving too slowly and failing to keep up with the number of electric vehicles appearing on the roads. It was calculated that, in order meet its target of 300,000 publicly available chargers by 2030, the UK government would need to increase the number of monthly installations by more than 350 per cent.

If you drive an electric vehicle, you may not be aware that charging your vehicle up (and not beyond) 80 per cent is one way to preserve its battery. Interestingly, when using a public charger, it can take the same time to charge an EV from 80 per cent to 100 per cent, as charging from 10 per cent to 80 per cent. This is a deliberate feature implemented by manufacturers to discourage charging beyond 80 per cent.
