London has more EV charging points than three other major UK cities combined

The latest set of electric charger figures from the government reveals a large disparity in infrastructure between London and the rest of the UK.

Analysis of the data by The Telegraph found that the London Borough of Westminster alone has more EV charging points (1,832) than Birmingham (429), Manchester (158) and Newcastle (152) combined.

Central London also has 893 chargers per 100,000 people, making charging availability 18 times better than in Leeds, and 28 times more than in Bristol.

As a whole, London has an average of 131 electric vehicle chargers for every 100,000 people.

Throughout the rest of the UK, this average is significantly lower at just 41.8 chargers per 100,000 people.

Interestingly, Coventry has the most electric chargers outside of London (903), equating to 263 chargers for every 100,000 people.

These revelations have arrived shortly after it was discovered that the government is behind with its plans to install 300,000 EV charging points by 2030, which it has since announced will be supported by a new £450 million investment.

A Department for Transport spokesperson said, “We want to maximise the opportunities available for motorists to switch to electric vehicles, which we’ve supported by spending more than £2 billion.

“Today a driver is never more than 25 miles away from a rapid chargepoint anywhere along England's motorways major A roads.”
