Greenhouse gas emissions in Britain fell by 3.4 per cent in 2022

Analysis of government figures by science and climate change policy experts at Carbon Brief found that greenhouse gas emissions in Britain fell by 3.4 per cent in 2022, despite economic growth of 4 per cent.
This figure is higher than the global average and, according to the International Energy Agency, contrasts with falls of:
- 0.2 per cent in China
- 2.5 per cent in the EU
- 0.8 per cent in the US.
Last year’s emissions reduction in Britain leaves us at 412 million tonnes of CO2 - about halfway to the UK government’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
Whilst this is positive news, the experts clarified that the 3.4 per cent decrease will need to be repeated every year for ‘decades’ in order to meet the 2050 net zero target, starting with an emissions fall of 15 million tonnes of CO2 in 2023.
Carbon Brief senior policy editor Simon Evans, pointed out that this might be a challenging pace to maintain, particularly given that the large reduction in emissions seen over the past decade have been largely thanks to the phasing out of coal power plants. Now, with the final plant set to close in 2024, matching those impressive annual emissions drops could be difficult.
The Climate Change Committee, a statutory body which advises the UK government, says that poor home insulation, slow agricultural progress and failure to change public behaviours such as high meat consumption are all hindering emissions reduction.
