Drivers to be fined for overstaying at EV chargepoints

Drivers to be fined for overstaying at EV chargepoints

Drivers of electric vehicles are now subject to penalties for spending too long at EV chargepoints.

Penalty amounts vary between locations and chargepoint providers. Examples of overstay fees include:

£30 after one hour in Aberdeen as of April 1 2023. Similar charges have applied in the Highlands since the beginning of the year.
£20 after one hour in Sheffield as of April 1 2023.
£8 after one hour at 350 ESB charge points in London.
£10 after 90 minutes at GeniePoint stations, plus an addtional £10 for every 90 minutes thereafter.
50p or £1 per minute at Tesla chargepoints (depending on how many people are waiting to use a chargepoint at the station).
8p per minute at Liberty Charge stations.

The aim of the penalties is to improve EV charging availability by discouraging people from parking in charging bays when their vehicle is already fully charged, or if they are driving a petrol or diesel vehicle.

Liberty Charge chief executive Neil Isaacson said, “We have to make sure that our network is available as close to 100 per cent of the time as possible because that is the only way we are ever going to get a return on investment.”

Zap-Map co-founder Melanie Shufflebotham commented that whilst the introduction of an overstay charge was ‘understandable’, drivers should not be ‘unfairly penalised’ for using slower, low-powered chargers. This is particularly important given that those who use the public charging network are already paying more than those using home chargers.
