Government investment into 27 road safety improvement projects throughout the UK

Government investment into 27 road safety improvement projects throughout the UK

The Department for Transport (DfT) will provide a £47.5 million investment through its Safer Roads Fund to complete 27 projects on high-risk roads throughout England.

The projects are located in:

  1. Blackpool
  2. Bournemouth
  3. Brighton
  4. Derby
  5. Essex
  6. Hampshire
  7. Hertfordshire
  8. Hull
  9. Isle of Wight
  10. Lancashire
  11. Liverpool
  12. Newcastle
  13. Nottingham
  14. Oxfordshire
  15. Portsmouth
  16. Rotherham
  17. Salford
  18. Sandwell
  19. Sheffield
  20. Southampton
  21. Southend
  22. Suffolk
  23. Surrey
  24. Surrey
  25. Warwickshire
  26. Wiltshire.

The money will go towards re-designing junctions, improving signage, creating safer pedestrian crossings, and drawing new road markings in the pursuit of reducing the risk of collisions.

The DfT also suggests that the projects, which will be carried out in cooperation with local authorities and road safety groups, could help to reduce congestion, journey times, and emissions.

The allocation the funding has been based on data independently surveyed and provided by the Road Safety Foundation.

The funding has been allocated based on information about road safety risk provided by the Road Safety Foundation charity, which compared and analysed information about road accident fatalities and injuries versus traffic levels.

The charity currently estimates that the investment could contribute towards preventing 760 fatal and serious injuries from road traffic accidents over the next two decades.

Executive Director of the Road Safety Foundation Dr Suzy Charman said, “Systematic changes have already had a big impact on road death and serious injury, for example seatbelts and airbags protect lives when crashes happen. In the same way we can design roads safely so when crashes occur, people can walk away.

“This can be done by clearing or protecting roadsides, putting in cross hatchings to add space between vehicles which provides safer junctions like roundabouts, or adding signalisation and/or turning pockets, and including facilities for walking and cycling.”
