DVSA finds 1.3 million potentially unsafe vehicles are being driven on UK roads

The latest MOT Compliance Survey for 2021-22 by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) finds that 10.1 per cent of cars that were issued pass certificates, should have failed.

This means that there are now potentially around 1.3 million vehicles driving unsafely on UK roads.

A total of 12.2 per cent had incorrect MOT test results and, on the flip side, 2.1 per cent of vehicles which were failed, should have passed.

The data was compiled after 1,732 MOT tested vehicles were chosen at random for re-examination by DVSA mechanics in 2022, of which 65.9 per cent were found to have at least one defect which had been incorrectly examined or recorded in the first instance. Moreover, 51.6 per cent had three or more defects.

Interestingly, a DVSA spokesperson said that MOT testing standard have improved since its last report, with the vast majority of MOT testers carry out testing to the highest standards.

The most commonly defected areas detected by the DVSA mechanics in order of frequency were:

  1. Tyres: (734)
  2. Brakes: (660)
  3. Suspension: (642)
  4. Lights, reflectors and electrics: (422)
  5. Noise, emissions and leaks: (171)
  6. Body, chassis and structure: (164)
  7. Visibility: (142)
  8. Steering: (92)
  9. Vehicle identification: (46)
  10. Seatbelts: (45)

The RAC recently discovered that around 7.3 million vehicles fail their MOTs each year, with broken or faulty lights the leading culprit. Brake and tyre issues pose the most dangerous defects.
