Paris becomes the first capital city in Europe to ban e-scooters

Earlier this month, Paris became the first capital city in Europe to officially ban rented electric scooters.

This comes at the end of the city’s five-year rental e-scooter experiment, in which customers could rent an e-scooter via a mobile app and then leave it anywhere. This scheme was particularly popular with students and those under the age of 35.

The ban, which was voted for by almost 90 per cent of respondents to a referendum - aims to ‘calm’ the streets of Paris.

It has come into effect as a last resort, after the imposition of strict regulations – including limiting the number of e-scooter operators and limiting speeds – failed to mediate safety concerns.

E-scooters are most often used for short journeys and it is expected that former customers will walk as an alternative. However, there is speculation that the removal of e-scooters could boost uptake of rented electric bikes.

The e-scooters which were removed from the capital will be redistributed by providers to other cities, such as Warsaw, Berlin and London.

Green deputy mayor in charge of transport and public spaces David Belliard said, “We know that it’s possible to live in a big city without an electric scooter rental scheme. This is about our larger work to simplify, calm down and de-clutter the public space in Paris.”
