Almost half of drivers have been fined for speeding before

Data obtained by Confused.com through a Freedom of Information request to UK police found that:

• £45.7 million worth of fines are handed out to UK drivers each year.
• 1.74 million speeding offences were recorded over a 12-month period.
• 49,000 of those speeding offences were captured by one camera on the A40 – a figure which is more than double that of any other camera in the UK over the same period.
• Two of the most successful speed cameras are located at Junction 19 on the M4 and between junctions 19 and 20.
• Further research found that almost half of all drivers have been fined for speeding in the past.

Interestingly, of the 1.74 million motorists caught speeding, just 457,232 were fined £100 and had three penalty points added to their licence. The remaining while 698,115 avoided fines and penalty points by taking a speed awareness courses.

More than one fifth of drivers caught speeding admitted to knowingly exceeding the speed limit because the road ahead was clear. Seventeen per cent said they were speeding to reach their destination more quickly.

AA president Edmund King said, “With five people per day killed on our roads it is crucial that excessive speeding is controlled. So, whilst camera and speed awareness courses have a role to play, we still need 'cops in cars' to target the drink and drug drivers and other forms of careless and dangerous driving.

“We believe cameras are most effective when visible and targeted at crash hotspots rather than placed in places that might generate more tickets such as a motorway slip road.”
