EV battery manufacturer wins a share of the 2023 Earthshot prizes

Electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer Green, Renewable, Sustainable Technology (GRST) was among the winners of this year’s Earthshot prizes, organised by the Prince of Wales.

GRST was awarded £1million for developing a cleaner and more sustainable production process for lithium-ion batteries.

Their battery production process uses fewer components which can also be more easily recycled, and the batteries themselves are lower polluting than others. GRST uses a water-soluble binding composite rather than toxic solvents used by other battery manufacturers, meaning that lithium, cobalt and nickel can be more economically recovered and reused at the end of the batteries’ life cycle.

In terms of statistics, it is claimed that GRST’s method reduced greenhouse gas emissions from production by 40 per cent. Additionally, GRST says that their batteries last up to 10 per cent longer than an average EV battery.

GRST aims to expand its existing production lines globally, targeting a five per cent share of the green battery market by 2030. This could help to meet a predicted 30 per cent rise in EV battery demand as the International Energy Agency estimates there will be at least 125 million electric vehicles worldwide by 2030.
