Vandals damage hundreds of ULEZ cameras in protest against the recent expansion
13 December 2023
In recent months, there has been a drastic increase in crimes relating to London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) cameras.
The Metropolitan Police has reported a ‘drastic increase’ in crimes relating to London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) cameras, with 987 targeted by activists opposing the latest ULEZ expansion between April and November 2023. A further 767 were inflicted with damage which rendered them unable to capture images.
The vandalism included spray painting, ripping out wiring, and knocking the camera unit over.
The ULEZ expansion came into effect on August 29 2023 to cover the entire area of Greater London between the North and South Circular roads. Non-compliant vehicles are required to pay a daily fee of £12.50 to enter the zone.
Those who fail to pay are issued a fine starting at £180 and rising to £250 if the fine is not paid on time. If the charge is paid within two weeks, then it is reduced to £90.
In response to the camera vandalism, police vans with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems have been deployed throughout London.
