How can you plan future costings around your electric vehicle fleet?

If you have recently received a letter from Transport for London explaining that the 100% Cleaner Vehicle Discount for electric vehicles travelling within the London Congestion Zone is set to end, you might be feeling a little daunted.

The changes to the Congestion Charge are set to come into effect from January 2 2026 and mean that those driving an electric vehicle within the Congestion Zone will be expected to pay a daily charge with a new tiered discount system in place.

Electric car drivers will pay £13.50 (25% discount on the new daily charge of £18 – applicable if paid on the day)

Electric van drivers will pay £9 (50% discount)

EV drivers are set to be affected by several other upcoming changes, such as EV pay-per-mile road tax. Since the UK government applied Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) to EVs earlier this year, it has been announced that a new pay-per-mile tax on both electric and plug-in hybrid cars will be introduced from April 2028.

EV drivers currently pay £10 road tax for the first year after a new vehicle is registered, then an average of £195 per year thereafter.

You can discover more about pay-per-mile eVED and respond to the public consultation on the government website before it closes on 18 March 2026.
