Researchers at Nextbase have discovered that 54% of e-bike riders and 24% of e-scooter riders are failing to stop for red lights.
The study, part of the organisation’s ‘Red Light Reset’ campaign observed 78 major intersections across London, Manchester and Glasgow during peak travel times, recording more than 31,700 rider interactions across red light, pavement, pedestrian and traffic flow checks.
Offence rates included:
- Shared e-bike riders (such as Lime and Forest): 26%, up from 25% last year
- Personal e-bike riders: 28%, an 8% increase
- Pedal cyclists: 19%, consistent with last year
- Delivery riders on bikes: 22%, also the same as last year
- Delivery mopeds: 8%
- Pedestrians: 30% observed crossing before traffic lights had changed
Head of road safety at Nextbase Bryn Brooker said, “This year we’re seeing more and more incidents involving e-scooters and e-bikes making the news and going viral on social media, and our data shows why.
“Drivers worried about liability in these instances should look into a dash cam, which will always provide a neutral record of exactly who is at fault in the event of a crash.”
